Antistatic Packaging - Static Shielding and Moisture Barrier Bags

July 8th, 2007 · No Comments

Antistatic packaging is essential for most electronic products, common and uncommon. These especially include exposed components to be packaged. Excellent examples would be main boards, add-on cards and microchips. Proximity to any electrostatic field can result in the formation of static charges on these components. These components and articles have the propensity to be damaged by residual electrostatic charges. Microprocessors, for example, may sustain substantial damage from even small amounts of static charge. Anti-static packaging is therefore a must for these components.

Static Shielding Bags
static shielding bagsAnti-static packaging is done at several levels. One of the most common forms of this form of packaging is the static shielding bag. Simple in appearance and yet complex in the technology of its design, these bags protect the enclosed objects from all forms of harmful static fields. Quite a few designs of these bags allow visual access to the contents at the same time. The laminated structure contributes to the durability. Metal-out bags are optionally available. Reusable zip-top bags are also available for added portability.

Moisture Barrier Bags
moisture barrier bagsBy shielding against moisture, these bags provide shielding against water vapor as well as electrostatic charges. Multiple layers of aluminum in the material used in these bags are designed to resist puncture or leakage, making them extremely secure.

Anti-static Bubble Bags
By employing bubble wrap in antistatic packaging technology, anti-static bubble bags are used mainly for their capabilities to absorb physical shocks.

Most of these bags are effective enough to shield enclosed objects even after attenuation of over 96%. Due to the simplicity of their structure, static shielding bags are easier to manufacture directly from the materials in various sizes and shapes, as per necessities.

Conductive Foam
Polyurethane foam is widely used as an antistatic packaging material for packing and securing electronic components. It has multiple qualities:

  • It is an excellent shock absorber.
  • It can be made available in various shapes and molds for various products.
  • It resists solvents and is non-corrosive.
  • Humidity does not affect its abilities to shield against static charges.
  • It has indefinite longevity.

Manufacturers
A number of industries manufacture antistatic packaging materials and bags. A few examples in the field are  Polyplus Packaging Ltd. and Star Packaging Product Co. Ltd. Stat-Tech is an exponent in the manufacture of conductive foam. SCC is a custom manufacturer of anti-static packaging materials including vacuum sealers, humidity indicators, desiccants. Vacuum sealers, computer controlled vacuum sealers for dry packaging

Flexible anti-static packaging materials are generally sealable by the application of heat. Therefore, they can be used with most machines that allow mass packaging of products in flexible heat-sealed packets.
