Metabolix and agriculture giant Archer Daniels Midland find crop based solutions (mainly corn) in the place of regular plastics, which is biodegradeable and compostable for pharmaceutical packaging.
New joint venture called Telles has been established to market this technology and commecialise these products. Initially it will be targeted in food and consument product packaging and later file for approval to use it in pharma applications. Crop based packaging will be in a growing demand because of it environment friendliness and recycling feasibility. As conventional plastic packaging add landfill problems because they do not bio degrade.
The pharmaceutical industry is under the same pressure, the side by enterprises by goods food use was made to reduce and in order the use of non-biologically degradable packing up and already began to accept some biologically degradable articles as from strength loose-fills a packing up, in order to replace the conventional polystyrene.
These products have replaced more than half of the loose-fill polystyrene use in some markets, indicating the willingness of manufacturers to switch to a greener alternative, although a lack of resistance to moisture condensation has held back adoption for some applications.
