Packaging tapes or adhesive tapes are a very important part of most packaging processes. Packaging tape is used to bind together the packaging or a set or items together. They are also called self sticking tapes or pressure sensitive tapes having a sticky strip with a backing layer of paper or plastic. There are water activated packaging tapes and heat activation tapes that require water and heat to perform as adhesives for packaging purposes. Packaging tapes are used in offices, at home, in factories etc. for various day to day packing tasks. Upon application of pressure, the pressure sensitive tapes activate without any other support.
Types of tapes using in packaging
There are numerous types of packaging tapes available in the market for all sorts of applications.
Parcel packaging tapes: these are tapes made of strong material with a backing mostly of polypropylene substance. Normally used for sealing up huge boxes for shipping purposes. They maybe two three inches wide and opaque or clear as per the manufacturers choice.
Duct tapes: these are waterproof packaging tapes used for sealing purpose. They usually have a backing of particular fabric materials. Rubber based adhesives are used for such tapes. They are strong tapes used when products are exposed to the atmosphere. On a light note, these tapes can also be used to gag a person by sealing the lips!
Transparent general-purpose tapes: these are common cellophane packaging tapes. They use synthetic rubber or acrylic based adhesives and transparent film backing.
Vinyl packaging tapes: used to seal cans, made of polyvinyl chloride material. It is flexible and moderately elastic and provides a proper packaging support in case of uneven surfaces also.
Others: Cloth tapes, polyester packaging tapes, paper and filament tapes, OPP tapes and craft packaging tapes and protection tapes.
Machineries and Technologies
- Slitter machines to produce packaging tapes of desired dimensions by cutting the tape sheets.
- Stretching and coating machines to extend the packaging tapes to a certain length and stretching them tight so as to produce proper adhesive coating and ensure perfect alignment of adhesive with its backing material.

- Machines for printing holographs and other markings on the packaging tapes.
Needle looms are high speed equipment to produce very narrow tapes.
